Tax returns

UK tax returns - simple and stress-free.

The British tax system has its own rules - a different tax year, different forms, different deadlines. Whether you are employed, self-employed or running a limited company, we will help you file your tax return, stay on top of deadlines and reclaim any overpaid tax from HMRC.

Tax year

The UK tax year - different rules than back home

In the United Kingdom the tax year does not follow the calendar year - it runs from 6 April to 5 April the following year. This is a key difference to keep in mind when planning your finances. How you file depends on how you work: employees are taxed automatically through the PAYE system, while the self-employed and company directors must submit a return themselves.

  • Tax year: 6 April - 5 April
  • Employees are taxed automatically through PAYE
  • Self-employed individuals file through Self Assessment
  • Company directors and those receiving dividend income also file a Tax Return

Self Assessment

Who needs to file a tax return?

The Self Assessment system covers anyone whose income is not automatically taxed by an employer. You can file your return online or on paper - the deadline for the online version is 31 January after the end of the tax year. Even if you had no income in a given year, if you are registered for Self Assessment you are still required to file.

  • Sole traders and partners in a partnership
  • Workers registered under the Construction Industry Scheme (CIS)
  • Company directors and those with rental income
  • Individuals with foreign income or dividend income
  • Anyone who has not paid tax on additional earnings

Tax refund

Tax returns and reclaiming overpaid tax

Anyone legally employed in the UK has the right to claim back overpaid tax. The most common situations include changing jobs during the tax year, working for more than one employer at the same time, or having an incorrect tax code. The basis for a refund claim is your P45, P60 or payslips. You can apply for a refund at any time of the year.

  • Tax refund when changing jobs or working for multiple employers
  • P45 and P60 documents as the basis for your claim
  • Tax code verification and correction of overpayments
  • Preliminary calculation of the refund you may be entitled to

  • 31 January - online Tax Return submission and payment of the previous year's tax
  • 28 February - deadline for the 5% surcharge if tax was not paid by 31 January
  • 5 April - end of the tax year; 6 April - start of the new one
  • 31 July - second payment on account for income tax
  • 31 October - final deadline for a paper Tax Return
