What does settling tax in the UK look like?
Depending on whether you are employed or self-employed, your tax filing obligations will look different. As an employee, you do not have to file a return yourself - all your tax liabilities are settled through the PAYE system. Your situation will be different, however, if you are self-employed in the UK. In that case, the responsibility for filing rests with you - this is what the Self Assessment system is for. Of course, to make the task easier, it is worth looking for help from specialists who will handle all the formalities for you efficiently - you will find them, for example, at our accountancy office in London.
Remember too that as an earner you are also entitled to a tax refund in England - although the actual amount you can expect is individual to your case and depends on your income and whether it is below or above the current tax-free Personal Allowance in the UK.
What are the tax filing deadlines?
As for the deadlines by which all the filing formalities need to be completed - at the very beginning, you should get familiar with the exact rules that apply to your particular situation and the taxes you are required to pay. It is also worth remembering that the tax year in England is different from Poland’s, running from 6 April to 5 April.
For the self-employed and Partnerships, the key date is 31 January - this is the final deadline for submitting a Tax Return online for the previous year (taxpayers filing a paper Tax Return have less time, as the deadline for sending it is 31 October), and it is also the date by which the tax due must be paid.
For Ltd companies, in turn, the key deadlines are filing annual accounts with Companies House and paying Corporation Tax within 9 months of the end of the financial year, as well as filing the Tax Return within 12 months.
Those registered for VAT in the UK must submit a VAT Return to HMRC every three months - this is the accounting period. The deadline for filing the return online and paying the tax is 1 calendar month and 7 days from the end of the accounting period.
